Rostam - Half-Light

Rostam Batmanglij (no relation) has been tinkering in the studio for years. Firstly with Vampire Weekend which he left two years ago, then with Ra Ra Riot’s Wes Miles and more recently he’s been writing for pop acts like Carly Rae Jepson. But he’s hit a new peak with his debut album Half-Light.

It gives an insight into how important he was to Vampire Weekend’s sound (those Baroque strings make an appearance instantly taking you to VW’s preppy world) but this is a different beast. The hooks and melodies appear and dissolve behind constantly shifting instrumentation from round the world. Meanwhile Rostam’s sweet cracking voice provides a constant source of warmth. There’s a few standout songs on first hearing but it rewards repeats and before you know it, you’ll be walking around with a beaming smile on your face as you listen to it. Incredible pop music and even in a great year, this is top of the pile.
