Shawn Smith 1965 – 2019

Shawn was one of the those ‘best kept secret’ types. A veteran of the Seattle scene but in terms of his influences and style he was from a different place, or a whole bunch of places. This broad musical palette came across in his choice of projects.

He was one of those talents who you’ve probably heard but never heard of. He sang with Brad, which also featured Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard who led an on/off existence since 1992. He was one of the three original Twilight Singers, his voice sitting between Greg Dulli’s troubled soul and Harold Chichester’s falsetto where he made perfect sense. His love of funk shone through brightest in Pigeonhed and his voice probably got the most exposure when their song Battleflag was remixed by Lo-Fidelity All Stars. He was also a member of Satchel, and his most recent project was with ex members of Malfunkshen, From the North, where he was writing songs based around the lyrics of Andrew Wood, the Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshen singer who died in 1990.

Reports say he died on Friday 5 March from complications from Diabetes. Here he is playing Wrapped in my Memory, written about Andrew Wood but sadly appropriate for today.
